Neuhaus chocolate, the Belgian standard for Belgium chocolate
|
|
Belgian chocolate is known worldwide as the gold standard in chocolate.
Neuhaus chocolate represents the best of the best in Belgium, with a
strong history of quality and innovation. They offer exquisite
chocolates of almost every kind: the traditional Belgian pralines that
originated with Neuhaus, sumptuous truffles, and other unique
confections of their own invention to tempt taste buds across the globe.
Even as their company faces growing international demand, approximately
a third of the chocolates are still handmade.
Europe is home to many chocolatiers, but Belgian chocolate reigns
supreme in the minds of the many chocolate lovers who have tasted it. It
is often associated with richness and luxury and yet also with the
feelings of happiness and comfort that it can provide. The packaging is
usually quite memorable as well, presenting a visual representation of
the chocolate experience waiting inside.
Neuhaus chocolate is an excellent example of the finest chocolate in
Belgium. The first Neuhaus shop was opened by a Swiss immigrant to
Brussels named Jean Neuhaus in the 1800s. His grandson would invent the
now famous praline - the first bite-sized chocolate with a filling - and
the wife of this younger Neuhaus was innovative as well. She started the
tradition of carefully wrapping chocolates in eye-catching boxes.
Pralines may have their origin in Belgium, but Belgian pralines are well
sought-after in many other countries both inside and outside of Europe.
As a part of the European tradition of adding liqueur flavors to
chocolate, some pralines are infused with rum and other fine alcohols.
Of course, the most traditional flavor for praline filling is either
hazelnut or almond, as hazelnut is one of Europe’s best loved flavors.
Neuhaus recently celebrated its 150th anniversary, and Neuhaus chocolate
is as popular today as ever. Beautiful packages bearing the iconic “N”
logo - and containing even more beautiful chocolates! - are sold in 50
different countries. The company may no longer be in the Neuhaus family,
but by expanding into new realms of production and financing, the family
name lives on and continues to bring joy to more and more chocolate lovers.
Belgians themselves are especially fond of Neuhaus. Any Belgian will
tell you that Belgian chocolate is the finest in the world and fit for
royalty - and the Belgian royal family seems to agree! In 2000, the king
of Belgium granted the company the distinguished title of Accredited
Supplier to the Belgian Crown.
Some of the Belgian pralines crafted by Neuhaus even bear the names of
well-loved members of the royal family. The former king and queen,
Baudouin and Fabiola, each have a piece named after them. Baudouin’s mother, Princess
Astrid, is honored as well, and other pralines have such memorable names
as Mephisto and Bonaparte.
